Edit the live site

After publishing, chat and Click to edit work on the live site itself. What applies at once, what waits for your approval, and how Undo and Publish again behave.

Updated

Once a site is published there is no separate draft to merge: opening the site in InstaWP Studio connects to the live site. The top bar shows the Live pill, the preview shows the live pages, the chat says it is editing the live site, and chat, Click to edit, Undo and the WordPress editor all work as before. Open live site in the ⋯ menu opens it in a new tab.

What changes at once #

Ordinary edits apply straight to the live site and stay undoable: wording, design, new sections and pages, image swaps, moving or removing a section, colours and fonts.

What waits for your approval #

Changes that are hard to take back pause the request and ask you in plain words, with Approve and Skip:

  • deleting a page or post, unpublishing one or making it private;
  • replacing a whole existing page;
  • a header or footer change that drops menu links;
  • custom code and plugin work that changes the live site. The chat shows what the code is for ("Install and switch on WooCommerce"), whether it changes the site right away, and Show code. Approve for this request lets the rest of that request run without asking again; the next request asks afresh. Deletions, page replacements and menu removals are always asked one by one.

A request waits up to 15 minutes for an answer; no answer counts as Skip. Simple look-ups never ask.

Undo on the live site #

Undo takes back the last request on the live site, the same as on a draft. It refuses when a page it would restore was changed in WordPress since, and says so. An Undo made on the live site is only offered there.

Edits made elsewhere #

Edits you make in the live site's wp-admin are not read into chat the way draft edits are; the assistant reads the live pages when it needs them. If the chat shows Connect for editing, the connection to the live site has to be made again: it needs a card on the InstaWP account and a paid site.

Publish again #

Your browser still holds the draft the site was published from. Publish again in Site details sends it to the live site once more, keeping the InstaWP site, its address, plan and domains, and replacing the live content in place. The dialog says it replaces anything edited on the live site since publishing, and the live content is backed up first. Use it when a publish came out wrong, not as a routine way to push changes: for that, edit the live site directly.

What is not there on a live site #

Share a link and Reset this site belong to drafts. Each time the builder connects, it quietly updates its own plugin on the live site; the theme stays as published.
